Baby Abuser Attacked In Prison And Left With “Dead” Testicle

A man jailed for seriously injuring a four‑month‑old baby has been left with a “dead” testicle after a planned attack inside HMP Berwyn.

The Prison Assault

Qasim Afzal was targeted in his cell in February 2024 by four inmates who entered together and carried out a sustained assault. The violence was recorded on a mobile phone that had been smuggled into the prison.

Caernarfon Crown Court heard Afzal had “no escape” as he was punched, kicked and stamped on. A stamp to his groin caused catastrophic damage to one testicle, which doctors say has “effectively died” and may need to be removed.

Why He Was Targeted

Afzal was serving a sentence for attacking and injuring a four‑month‑old baby. Judge Timothy Petts said the prison assault was intended as a “punishment” for that offence.

The court heard Afzal had been warned an attack was coming and had been given a makeshift weapon, but it made no difference once the group entered his cell.

The Attackers

The four inmates involved were named as:

  • Zayn Abu‑Manahim, 30
  • Zaheer Hussain, 28
  • Farhar Khan, 29
  • Russell Lloyd, 34

All four admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent. Each man received an additional two‑and‑a‑half years on top of their existing sentences.

The judge said the man who filmed the assault was “equally culpable” as those who carried out the violence.

Medical Outcome

Afzal was taken to hospital after the attack. Surgeons later confirmed the damage to his testicle was irreversible and that it may need to be surgically removed.

Prison Context

HMP Berwyn has faced repeated scrutiny over violence, contraband phones and organised assaults. The Ministry of Justice said all incidents of violence are investigated and appropriate action is taken.
