Man denies murdering woman found in freezer but admits concealing her body

A 65‑year‑old man has admitted hiding the body of a woman whose remains were reportedly discovered inside a freezer — but he continues to deny murdering her or killing five guinea pigs.

George Gordon, of Gerards Court in St Helens, appeared via video link from prison on 1 May, wearing a grey jumper and jogging bottoms, as he entered a series of pleas before the court.

He is accused of killing 64‑year‑old Delia McInerney, whose body was found in a flat in St Helens in January. Ms McInerney, originally from Anfield in Liverpool, would have been 64 at the time her remains were discovered.

Gordon pleaded not guilty to murder. He also denied a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals, relating to the alleged killing of five guinea pigs.

However, reporting restrictions now lifted reveal that Gordon had already pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to a series of offences connected to the concealment of Ms McInerney’s body. These include:

  • Preventing a lawful and decent burial
  • Obstructing a coroner by concealing a body between April 2023 and January 2026
  • Three counts of fraud by false representation
  • Theft

These fraud and theft charges are said to relate directly to Ms McInerney.

Following her death, Ms McInerney’s sister, Rita, released a tribute through police describing her as “a great artist, a free spirit, really ‘out there’. A rebel. Intelligent with a dynamic personality. Kind, caring and helpful.” She added that her sister was “well‑loved” and would be “missed always”.

Gordon is due to stand trial on 12 October, with the case expected to last around six weeks.
