Martin Lewis breaks social media silence with urgent warning over July energy bills
Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis has broken his social media break to issue an “urgent” warning about energy bills, telling households a key way to dodge a likely July price rise “could disappear”.
Lewis, who had stepped back from regular posting, returned to flag that current wholesale prices suggest the July Ofgem price cap could be higher than the current level – and that some of the best fixed‑rate energy deals available now may be pulled before then.
Why he says July matters
Energy bills for most households are set by the Ofgem price cap, which is reviewed every three months. If wholesale prices stay elevated, the cap that kicks in from July is expected to rise, pushing typical annual bills higher again.
Lewis warned that a handful of suppliers are currently offering “safety‑net” fixes – tariffs that sit around or slightly below the level analysts expect the July cap to reach. These deals give customers some protection if prices jump.
“This option may not be around for long”
The consumer champion stressed he was not telling everyone to rush into a fix, but said people who have been considering it should be aware that:
- Suppliers can withdraw fixed deals at short notice if market conditions change.
- Once a tariff is pulled, it usually cannot be accessed again.
- Waiting too long could mean losing the chance to lock in a rate below a future cap.
His message was aimed at getting people to check their current deal, look at what their own supplier is offering and make an informed decision rather than being caught out if prices rise.
Check, don’t panic
Lewis has repeatedly said that whether fixing is right depends on individual circumstances – usage, current tariff, and what’s on offer. His latest warning is about timing and the risk that today’s options may not still be there by the time the July cap is confirmed.
Households are being urged to:
- Log in to their energy account and see what fixes are available.
- Compare any fixed offers with current and predicted price cap levels.
- Avoid knee‑jerk decisions, but don’t ignore the issue until it’s too late.
