North East predator jailed for remotely abusing eight-year-old girl in Australia

A North East man has been jailed after remotely abusing an eight-year-old girl in Australia, sending her “horrific” sexual messages and coercing her into sharing indecent images over the internet.

Simon Bell, from the North East, targeted the child online and built up contact with her before turning the conversations sexual. A court heard how he pretended to be younger, groomed her over messages and then pressured her into sending images of herself.

“Horrific messages” to an eight-year-old

Prosecutors said Bell’s messages to the girl were “horrific”, explicit and persistent. He called her pet names, sexualised her and tried to normalise the abuse by presenting it as a “secret” between them.

The court was told that Bell knew the girl was just eight years old and living in Australia, but continued to send sexual messages and requests. He encouraged her to pose in certain ways and to send him indecent images.

Indecent images and devices seized

Bell’s offending came to light after authorities in Australia raised concerns about the online contact. UK police later raided his home and seized his electronic devices.

On those devices, officers found indecent images of children, including material linked to the eight-year-old victim. The court heard that Bell had stored and viewed child abuse images alongside the messages he sent.

International abuse from behind a screen

The case was described in court as a stark example of how abusers can target children in other countries without ever leaving their own home. Bell never met the girl in person, but his actions left a child on the other side of the world exposed to serious sexual harm.

Investigators said the case underlined the importance of cross-border cooperation between police forces and the need for parents and carers to be aware of who children are speaking to online.

Jailed for child sexual offences

Bell admitted a series of child sexual offences relating to the online abuse and the indecent images found on his devices. He was jailed for a custodial term reflecting the age of the victim, the nature of the messages and the international element of the case.

Sentencing, the judge condemned Bell’s behaviour as calculated and exploitative, saying he had deliberately targeted a very young child and exposed her to sexual content she could not possibly understand.

Online safety warning

The case has prompted renewed warnings about online grooming, with police urging families to monitor children’s internet use and to report any concerns immediately.

TrueNorth News will continue to report on online child abuse cases and the efforts being made to track offenders who hide behind screens and fake profiles.
